Nomad [noh-mad]

Noun

  1. a member of a people or tribe that has no permanent abode but moves about from place to place, usually seasonally and often following a traditional route or circuit according to the state of the pasturage or food supply.
  2. any wanderer; itinerant1.

HCL Nomad for web browsers as a product is the embodiment of exactly those ideas; no permanent abode, often following a traditional route.

Let’s explore those two attributes.

  1. You might consider that since Nomad has nothing to install on your desktop it has no permanent abode, but instead resides in your web browser.
  2. Often, but not always, following traditional routes. Even nomadic tribes sometimes must strike out on a new path to discover fresh grazing land or food sources. Similarly, with HCL Nomad, we often follow a path that HCL Notes has charted before, but not always.

Explore New Nomad Functionality

In the latest versions of HCL Nomad for web browsers, you'll find that we've been heading in a new direction along a previously uncharted trail. You could say we are looking for fresh grazing land in the form of creating linkage to other applications using the Component Object Model (COM). We've developed a browser extension that links your LotusScript agents to any desktop-installed application that accepts COM communication, such as LibreOffice and Microsoft Office.

Following that, in the update to Nomad 1.0.13, there is new beta functionality that enables you to connect to the native file system. This allows you to create files in the operating system file system, open them in any COM-capable application, make changes to them, and then read them back into your Nomad application. Did I hear someone ask for ‘round-tripping’? Yes, we were listening.

That’s Not All We’ve Done

Along with that, we’ve also been working hard on addressing numerous accessibility issues in preparation for the activation of European Union legislation for software accessibility in mid-2025.
