You’ve heard us talk about moving from Day 1 DevOps to Day 2 DevOps for a while now in blog posts, webinars, eBooks, and conferences. We keep talking about it because we truly believe in helping organizations reach the next step in their DevOps journey. Day 2 DevOps is more than just buzzy term – it’s the next step in the DevOps evolution.

Global research and advisory firm, 451 Research (now part of S&P Global Market Intelligence), wrote a Market Insight Report evaluating the HCLSoftware DevOps portfolio and our efforts to create an end-to-end platform supporting Day 2 DevOps. You can read the entire report here, but first, let’s talk a little more about what we mean when we talk about Day 2 DevOps.

As 451 Research points out, “There’s been a shift in software delivery from traditional waterfall approaches to agile, to DevOps (continuous everything and automation) and toward next-generation AI and data-driven value stream management (improving the DevOps pipeline), automated governance and business agility.” This bridge between continuous everything and next-gen business agility is where HCLSoftware DevOps excels as a partner in your organization’s journey.

The first stage of a DevOps journey (Day 1 DevOps) is about establishing continuous delivery pipelines. Organizations in this phase might say “we do some DevOps” and have pockets of automation throughout the SDLC but haven’t optimized the pipeline to its best state. The next stage of the DevOps journey (Day 2) is when organizations scale continuous practices across the enterprise and optimize their value streams to shift governance left, visualize work flows, and reconcile data across multiple tools. This transformation isn’t just DevOps for the sake of doing DevOps – it’s about streamlining execution to respond faster to market demands, stay ahead of the competition, and improve internal cohesion.

How do you get from Day 1 to Day 2? A solid value stream management tool that sits on top of your existing pipeline is key. For example, HCL Accelerate is built to aggregate data from your disjointed tools so you can quickly get key insights and detect bottlenecks. Test automation, security scanning, and deployment automation are also part of the equation. Aside from tooling, a cultural shift is necessary to take a value stream optimization approach and align all teams toward the same business goals.

With more than half of 451 Research survey respondents saying they are using DevOps across their entire IT organizations today, it’s clear that a DevOps evolution is necessary for organizations that release software to stay competitive. Check out the 451 Research Market Insight Report to get their take on how HCLSoftware DevOps can support your journey to Day 2 DevOps.
