Thousands of households across the region are without electricity after a rare storm hit the area and devastated parts of the power grid, disrupting and damaging both businesses and homes. Powerful wind and lightning knocked out power and Acme Utility has to react quickly. The storm has impacted multiple counties, and Acme Utility has to call in crews from nearby towns to assist with repairs. The utility company needs to coordinate incoming requests, remote teams, and repairs with inventory. Luckily, they have the right tools.

While Acme works to repair damage to the central grid infrastructure, thousands are still without power in residential neighborhoods. Using a mobile app built with HCL Volt MX, Kristen — a citizen who is experiencing a power outage in her area — can check to see where outages have recently been reported near her. No one had yet reported an outage, so she quickly taps the app and reports her outage, including local details that could be helpful, such as downed trees or power lines. Kristen’s outage information is passed to customer service to handle.

Acme Utility’s customer service rep receives the outage report in her queue and quickly acts using the newly developed Outage Triage System built using HCL Domino Volt. The triage system uses the data captured in the mobile app that connects to the company’s parts inventory and crew management data resources. Blending data from the outage report with the inventory system, Kristen’s location, and crew data, the triage system can predetermine a required part and assign a task to the nearest and most relevant line crew to complete the work order.

The line crew, equipped with this information, can now get to the damaged area and start repairs. The repair team uses the HCL Volt MX mobile app to scan a barcode on the old part and check a new part into the system — helping with inventory control and ensuring safety and compatibility. In addition to scanning the parts, their mobile app has a “Safety Inspection Checklist” that they must complete to ensure the job has been done thoroughly and to code before notifying operations that the work was completed. Once complete, they’re able to mark this repair done, and move on to the next outage. Kristen is notified via her wearable that her outage is fixed.

Acme Utility had to act quickly because the storm had impacted a large area, and they had to rely on additional line crews for a rapid response to power outages.
The HCL Volt MX mobile app had been there to report incidents, but the ability to triage the requests was not something Acme had had in place. Using the low-code ability of HCL Domino Volt, Acme had an app ready in only a few hours that pulled together data from the inventory system, as well as another app that stored crew information. Data from the mobile app flowed to the triage application, where additional data was captured and passed on to the repair team.
When the crew marked the work as done, this data then flowed to the triage system to complete the process. And this data was used to monitor progress and provide analytics.
